You know I never got to like Yeoman Rand on the show, which was probably because she spent such a brief time on the show, only 8 episodes. She was very open and honest, which I really respected and think it was very brave of her to divulge that at a wrap party she got drunk and went off with an executive and was sodomy raped. Very shortly after this they allowed her to be let out of her contract. She went on to talk about how years later she ran into DeForest Kelley (in the unemployment line I think) and him telling her about Star Trek conventions and getting her back in touch with Gene Roddenberry who told her about the revival of the Star Trek show which ended up being The Motion Picture and her getting involved. She spoke fondly of her time on Star Trek. Adam asked her about the amazing sets that she said were made out of spit and rubber bands and the actual amazing sets for The Motion Picture that were so great they seemed they could actually fly. But that men were behind the sets snoring because they had to be back there to pull the rope to open the doors, saying this was how archaic it all was on the original series. She talked about the unrequited love her character had for Captain Kirk, because he was already in love with the Enterprise. She said during a kiss with William Shatner he slipped a couch drop in her mouth hahaha. Its too bad I didn't get to the convention sooner to hear all of Grace Lee Whitney speak but I really enjoyed hearing what I did.

then James Darren came to talk on stage. He talked to fans about DS9. But a few fans asked about Gidget and he said he thought Sandra Dee was so cute but was a good boy cause her mother was on set every day and ruled with an iron arm (I think he meant fist) and that he and Sandra were too young to get involved anyway. Another fan asked about Time Tunnel and he talked about how itchy the wool turtle neck was, having been made out of such course material and that they eventually lined it with silk so it would be more comfortable. I think he also said he still has it in his closet. I was glad he talked a little bit about Gidget since I haven't ever seen him on DS9 and I love him so much as Moondoggie.

meanwhile to the side of the stage, near where I was sitting George Takei was signing autographs. I was close enough to see him and his partner, which reminded me of in 2009 when my mom and I rode in an elevator with him and Brad at the Hilton! So exciting!

next up was Sir Patrick Stewart. He was pretty cute. He mentioned first how he was made aware by a man who got his autograph this year on a photo of him and Patrick Stewart from last years convention and that he was wearing the same clothes as last years convention. But wanted to assure everyone he was not down to his last outfit and it was a huge coincidence. It was at this time that the theater was nearly packed. Cause not only was it Patrick Stewart but Kate Mulgrew and William Shatner were also going to join him on stage. While on stage solo a fan asked him to tell a story about an interesting experience he has had with a fan. He told us there were MANY but a more recent experience was at another convention not to long ago where someone came up to him in the dealers room and whispered in his ear that a fan wanted to propose marriage to his girlfriend in front of him. He said okay and the man brought his girlfriend over to where Patrick was and unexpected to his girlfriend proposed to her, she agreed and Patrick took both their hands and said "engaged." Haha, get it? Pretty funny. He said it was very special and a moving experience he was happy to be a part of.

while Patrick was speaking Brent Spiner snuck out into the line of people waiting to ask questions and pretended to be an ignorant Star Trek fan. This gave the audience a great laugh.

finally Kate and Bill came and joined him on stage. Bill likes to have the spotlight on him so he talked a lot...which I loved! He is my favorite! So I was glad. They got asked some captain related questions and then Patrick had to leave to catch a flight. When it was just Kate and Bill on stage the spoke about how they met and about the documentary Bill did called The Captains, I need to watch that. When it was just Bill on stage a young fan asked about the death of Kirk to which Bill had a really long answer but that he ultimately decided that it was better to have a part in death of Kirk than to not. He talked a lot about the more deep, profound affect that Star Trek has. And the more deep spiritual side of life. He spoke about how it was wonderful to meet all the people he has at this convention while working on his new documentary Fan Addicts. He had the audience all scream and hold up signs saying Fan Addicts for the documentary, so when it comes out, I'm in that crowd somewhere.

after the three captains it was Asian power time! George Takei and John Cho came on stage accompanied by Garrett Wang, all there as the Asians represented in Star Trek. George talked about the significance of being an Asian on tv in the sixties. When the two of them were asked questions you could see that John was so new and inexperienced with the significance of Star Trek to its fans and culture. His answers were much more shallow and you could tell he did not identify with all of it like the senior cast of the original series does. I'm not saying it s a bad thing I am merely expressing that it was apparent. I would have been surprised if he had been more insightful and aware of such things. He did however mention that when he was offered or when he accepted the role that he had lunch with George to discuss the fact that he was Korean and not Japanese like George and if the fans would be displeased with that. But George explained that it was Genes vision that many cultures and races be represented and come together and the fact that he was Asian and there to represent all of Asia. I think George said it was a quote from Gene or that he had heard from Gene about "the water of the sea touches all shores" and that was what Star Trek was to represent.

and lastly on stage was Nichelle Nichols. She was to start at 6:30 so I go there a few minutes before but she had already started I guess because she had a flight to catch. I came to appreciate the original series cast speakers the best. All of them really identify with the characters they portrayed and were very aware and respectful of the vision Gene had. Nichelle was asked by a fan how she got her beautiful name and told us how when she was 11 or 12 she told her mother she didn't like her name Grace or being called Gracie. Her mother told her that her and her father were going to name her Michelle and that was an option but she didn't see herself as a Michelle but they came up with Nichelle instead. She talked about politics. She spoke about the cultural significance of being a black female on tv at the time. She mentioned about finding out that Obama had a crush on her as Uhura when he was younger, she was really proud of that. She sang a lot too, she was nice to see speak.

here are the goodies I took with me from the convention. I purchased the Mugato toy for five bucks. There really wasn't that much stuff in the vendors room that I was interested in purchasing. There were some Hallmark Star Trek ornaments that I would loved to have had but those get really expensive as they get older. There was a Star Trek pop up book but it was not that impressive for the price the vendor wanted for it.

So after all this I got back in my car and headed home around seven. It was a beautiful night, the moon was full and gorgeous. Driving in the moonlight I got into a meditative state and had lots to think about. I'm glad I ended up going. It was not as miserable to go alone as I thought it would have been. A few people talked to me about the cool Star Trek shirts I was wearing and I sat next to two lovely people from Montana and Ohio. I never got their names but it was an uncle and niece. This was their first convention and were having a blast. They were so nice, every time they got out food to snack on they would offer me some. I was offered fig newtons, gummy bears and chocolate. They really played a part in making my convention going experience better because I thought by going alone I would not have anyone speak to me for two days. When the convention was over they wished me a safe journey home and I was so caught off guard by this niceness that all I could quickly think to say was that it was nice to meet them.

I don't think I need to go to another Star trek convention for a while. Maybe in five years when Star Trek turns 50. Maybe Leonard will come out of retirement to celebrate 50 years. I did have a thought that it would be cool to go to a convention as a dealer and sell my Star Trek art. I would have to make more than I have at the moment but I thought it was an interesting idea I might think about.

Star Trek Con 2011 pt.2

Then it was finally time for the great Leonard Nimoy!

I had just seen him in May, I think, in Phonix for the Phoenix Comic Con and he gave the same speech he gave then. He talked about his life and family and some jobs and movies/tv he did before he became Spock on Star Trek. He talked about experiences with fans. His photography. And about things that inspire and move him. When he was all through he commented on what an amazing experience this has all been and got choked up since this was his last Las Vegas Star Trek convention and I got a little teary eyed. He did not take questions from fans. I'm glad I got to see him one more time. I've seen his a total of three times. I appreciate the more sensitive creative side he reveals. Unfortunately all through his talk I had a horrible head ache and my back hurt really bad which was rather distracting. So when he was through on stage I went to find the Motel 6 on Tropicana, it was easy to find and I took a nap.

Here is the view of the strip from my room

After I woke up, I headed back to the Rio. So this time I am really going to post about the whole experience so I don't forget and kick myself about it later.

When I was working at Laika earlier this year I earned a little money so I bought a ticket to the Las Vegas Star Trek convention that was celebrating 45 years of Star Trek. This was going to be the last year that Leonard Nimoy was going to do conventions, so I really wanted to go. Unfortunately this year we have been a little tight on money so only I could go to the convention. I didn't really want to go alone and probably my depression had made me not so excited to go at all. I debated a long time whether or not to go. Besides not having enough money to go to all four days of the con, I felt maybe I shouldn't even spend the money to go to two days. Saturday rolls around and I wake up really early to decide if I'm gonna go. I shower, with the intent to go. And then flip flop back and forth some more and finally at 6:30 am I decided if I didn't go I might regret it. So in kind of a bad mood I get in my car and head for Vegas. Even though the a/c in my car doesn't work the drive was just fine. I made it there in about 4-4.5 hrs.

The convention was held at the Rio this year. It was really easy to get to, it was right off the 15 freeway.

When I got there I checked in and then went into the main theater.

Onstage was Terry Farrell aka Lt. Cmdr. Jadzia Dax.

Some how I accidentally deleted the pictures I took of her so I found the above pic online. She seemed nice. I didn't catch all her time on stage but she talked about how she is accident prone and her manager wanted wrap her in bubble wrap. Some fans asked about the death of her character Dax, she talked about that her six year contract on DS9 ended and then very shortly after she got her role on Becker. When she was done she said she was just getting into the groove and was now having to get off stage. She was thankful to be apart of the Star Trek family and thankful to be asked to come to the convention so she could see all her friends and expressed her sincere appreciation for Star Trek.

Next up was Brent Spiner, he was part of the pictures I accidentally deleted, so I found this one online.

I remember from last time he is such a ham on stage, loves attention. He addressed the fact that he was on the huge stage banner and that Jonathan Franks was not. Saying the more special actors were on the poster. A fan asked about the make up he had to wear and he said it took an hour and fifteen minutes to apply every day, but saying "it was well worth it, wasn't it?" Another fan asked about an episode I am unfamiliar with where the members of the NexGen cast all de-evolved into other animals or creatures but Data was immune but if he could have been turned into something else what would it have been; his response was a Mixmaster mixer or a blender, he supposed. A lady asked him if he would laugh for her...he said no. Another person asked if he would do the voice he did on Night Court, he did. Then went onto say that the Wheelers should have their own show. When he was through he too expressed his appreciation for Star Trek.

After Brent I left to try and find something to eat before Kate Mulgrew was up. I couldn't find anything so I ate the snacks I had in the car.

So then Kate Mulgrew took the stage and was joined by Garrett Wang.

Garrett was only on stage for a little bit with Kate. She talked a lot about the ideological problems Paramount had with having a female captain and that they didn't know what to do with a female in this role. How her breasts were taped down, her hair was being changed constantly and how restrained and militaristic she was. But she said the people want a commander, right? And she said "if they let me have her, I can fly and we did." She also told everyone it was her choice that she and Chakotay never entered into a romantic relationship, partly to do with all the horrible things that could be said about what was going on in her ready room. She also talked about her sons a lot and the issues they had with her being on Star Trek.

After Kate Mulgrew I wandered around and into the vendors room because I had some time to kill before Leonard Nimoy came on stage. It was the Captain's Chair Patrons Dinner and Party at the Stratosphere Hotel. At the party would be Connor Trinneer, Dominic Keating, Anthony Montgomery, John Billingsley, Gary Graham and the Tim Russ Band. We went a little later cause I wasn't that enthused after seeing these guys earlier at the con. When we got there Connor was doing a monologue from something he wrote (I guess) and then Anthony went up and talked about his new rap album and then rapped...it was lame. So my mom and I walked around, looked at the view and what food was there. It was already pretty picked over and there was a long line for the dessert table which had a chocolate fountain. I am opposed to buffet style food so I didn't eat anything except fortune cookies, there were fortune cookies on almost every table with food. So when my mom and I walked by any table we would grab cookies. I also took some to eat later.

While we were looking at the really beautiful view, in a particular spot you could hear screams and if you looked up you could see one of the rides from the roof dangling over the edge. I pointed up to show my mom and asked if she wanted to go on the rides. The look on her face when she saw the 'X-Scream' was amazing! She was horrified. She said she wasn't going to do that but I talked her into going on 'Big Shot.' Which she still can't believe she went on. What are these rides you ask? Well, I will show you.

Here is a picture of the Stratosphere from the strip. The arrow at the top shows the 'Big Shot' ride that shoots you to a height 1,081 feet and then drops you. And the lower arrow points to the 'X-Scream' which is like a giant teeter totter that sends you over the edge.

'Big Shot' was so fun! Look at my moms face! Priceless! When we were sitting in the ride waiting for it to shoot up, this husband and wife were in line, and the woman was mortified. She was so funny, she looked at me and and said "are you doing this willingly?" I told her yes and asked her "aren't you?" she said no, that her husband was making her. She said "you look normal, why would you want to do this?" hahahah. The reason my hands are out is cause another guy in line watching was telling us to put our hands out, which was a good idea cause it made it feel like you were free falling! It was awesome, i would totally go on it again.

I thought 'X-Scream' was not scary at all. I think it would have been better had I gotten to sit in the front, so I was hanging over the side looking down since I was not impressed.

The rides were free for the people who were at the Star Trek party, which was nice cause the rides cost about $15 a piece. We had unlimited free access to all three rides. But we only went once cause otherwise I would have had to wait in line by myself (like I did for 'X-Scream').

So when we met up after I went on the teeter totter ride, we bought the pictures from the rides and went back to the party; where The Tim Russ Band was playing. So we stuck around and listened to them for a bit. It was blue grass music I think, maybe a little jazzy too, pretty good.

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Unfortunatly I didn't get a good picture of the whole group. And I haven't watched the DS9 series yet, so I didn't know some of the stuff they talked about but they were great and I really enjoyed their stories. Everyone was pretty funny. One fan asked if any of them took souvenirs from the show after they went off the air. Jeffrey Combs said after shooting one day Rene Auberjonois ripped off his face mask and said "here." They all said if they had known how much some of the props would sell for they all would have looted the place. Casey Biggs said he was astonished that his uniform sold for something like $1500. He said it never even fit right!

Jeffrey Combs played a character that got killed in almost every episode on DS9 but I know him as Shran on the Enterprise series. He talked about how when the cast would get a script and people would say "damn, I get killed in this episode." Combs would say "oh, me too." But he was a Vorta, which was a clone with at least eight copies so was lucky enough to come back every time and not lose his job :)

Here is Jeffrey Combs and Chase Masterson . Chase looked ditzy but was actually one of my favorite speakers on this panel. She talked about how she has been producing some movies and told us that we should support the writers who worked on your favorite Star Trek shows by watching shows they work on now. I liked that she was giving props to the people who actually make the shows.

Here is Armin Shimerman and Colm Meaney. My dad lent me the entire Enterprise series on DVD when I was in school and I watched the whole thing, so I was pretty excited for this but was sorely disappointed. I don't remember John Billingsley acting bad either. I was slightly disappointed in Gary Graham too cause he acted just as bad as others, which was shocking to me cause he played a very serious Vulcan Ambassador on the show.

Connor put down the direction his character on the show took. But not just any set, this is the set that was released in 2004. Why did I purchase this particular one? Because this set does not have the computer enhanced special effects. The most recent dvd set of TOS has horrible opening credits that have been "enhanced." Instead of the classic cute model of the Enterprise flying around they replaced it with a cg Enterprise. I want to watch the original Star Trek in its ORIGINAL form. So last weekend I finally bought the first season for myself!
